I would also like to see how much time the students are logging on. I know that students can spend time researching or even reading downloaded articles/material, but I believe it is important that the students are reviwing the forums and discussions and commenting on the other students postings.

This is a great idea to see some real time log ins and a tool for statistical analysis to show participation in all aspects of the portal. We would get a better handle on accountability and uniformity across the board for students and faculty...

Yes,Bob...agreed that a student can log in and then go run errands, but I do think that for the most part, the amount of log-ins and time in the system is an indicator.  I would like to see time logged in as a report.

I agree with the advantage that Blackboard has to track not only the amount of time students are logged on, but the day(s) and time(s) as well.  It gives a little bit of a sense of 'Big Brother',  but it does give the instructor a sense of trends in the class and when the best time would be for things like live chats.

I go back and forth on early submissions.   I stopped doing it after one student handed in all five weeks of material during week 1 and then basically checked out for the rest of the session.   My perspective now is that students can see the assignments and can easily prepare them in advance on their own PC's but then can be held to the regular submission dates.
