Description
A study of architecture, sculpture, painting, and minor arts of Ancient Rome, the cradle of Western civilization, from circa 400 BCE to 300 CE in the west, with special emphasis on the individuality that develops in the Roman aesthetic. Projects and themes include: the birth of the individual in portraiture, investigation of the classical style and its evolution into individual realism, the birth of city structure. Course will include regular museum work/study at the
University of Pennsylvania Museum and the newly-renovated Roman section of New York?s Metropolitan Museum of Art. No prerequisite. Offered regularly upon rotation, with other courses in Ancient art. 1 or 3 credits.
